Luz, US
Army
represented
in the
2011 Day
of
Portugal
Parade
by his
daughter-in-law,
Colonel
Susan
Luz, US
Army
(ret)
and his
daughter
Lana Luz
Miller.
Technician
Fourth
Grade
George
Luz, Sr.
(June
17, 1921
-
October
15,
1998)
was a
non-commissioned
officer
with
Easy
Company,
2nd
Battalion,
506th
Parachute
Infantry
Regiment,
in the
101st
Airborne
Division
during
World
War II.
Luz was
portrayed
in the
HBO
miniseries
Band
of
Brothers
by Rick
Gomez.
He is
credited
with
keeping
Easy
Company
morale
up with
his
humor in
dire
times.
Luz was
born in
Fall
River,
Massachusetts
to
Portuguese
parents,
and grew
up in
West
Warwick,
Rhode
Island
with
nine
siblings.
Luz
enlisted
on
August
25, 1942
in
Providence,
Rhode
Island.
George
Luz
jumped
into
Normandy
on June
6, 1944
and
participated
in
Operation
Market
Garden
and in
the
Battle
of the
Bulge.
He was
presented
with the
World
War II
Victory
Medal,
the
Presidential
Unit
Citation
(2OLC),
the
Bronze
Star and
the
Purple
Heart.
After
the war,
he
settled
in West
Warwick,
RI
married
Delvina
Rogers
and was
the
father
of three
children.
He died
in an
industrial
accident
in
October
15,
1998.
His son
George,
Jr. and
daughter,
Lana Luz
Miller
are
active
in Band
of
Brothers
events
and in
keeping
his
legacy
alive.
Daughter-in
–law,
Colonel
Susan
Luz,
US Army
(Ret), a
hero in
her own
right,
is the
highest
ranking
soldier
in the
399th
Combat
Support
Hospital,
an Army
reserve
unit
based in
Massachusetts.
She is a
bronze
star
decorated
nurse
who
served
in Mosul
during
the
surge of
the Iraq
war
(2006
and
2007).
Her book
“Nightingale
of
Mosul”
(2010)
tells
the
story of
her life
as a
Peace
Corps
volunteer
in
Brazil,
an inner
city
school
nurse-teacher,
a
psychiatric
nurse in
jails
and
adolescent
wards.
She
holds a
nursing
degree
from the
University
of Rhode
Island
and a
master’s
degree
in
Public
Health
from
Boston
University.
She
lives
with her
husband
George
Luz, Jr.
in Rhode
Island.
